Shopping for deals in the off-season

Tis the season for U.S.-based Francophiles to gaze across the pond with glee. Though the Euro is drubbing the dollar, opportunities abound for savvy travelers to score great off-peak bargains. Specifically, Paris, the birthplace of couture, becomes far more affordable come winter.
For starters, it's cheaper to get to Europe off-season. Recent round-trip sale airfares from the East Coast to Paris have ranged around $500, with return trips from the West Coast hovering around $650. Travel bargain sites like Travelzoo.com and Airfarewatchdog.com have weekly e-mail lists highlighting discounted and last-minute fares; if you're looking to get your France on, sign up.
When you're on the ground in Paris, you'll find another low-season benefit: far fewer crowds than during summer's crush. By traveling against the grain, you'll enjoy greater tranquility in Notre Dame, more elbow room at the Louvre. You'll be sharing the city with the locals: Better to queue up at the Centre Pompidou or Musée d'Orsay with field-tripping Parisian schoolkids than packaged tour groups cranky with jet lag.

For the Love of Jeans

Passion has often been the driving force for successful
entrepreneurs, like Ino Caluza whose Viktor Jeans are starting to become a
byword among serious denim lovers.

In past issues of this magazine, we
have seen how passion has brought success to various entrepreneurs. Jay Aldeguer
turned his frustration into inspiration by opening Islands Souvenirs, a souvenir
chain where one can find colorful products that we can bring home as pasalubong.
On the other hand, photography and his incessant hunger for learning new things
propelled John Chua to become a leader in the field of advertising photography.
From humble beginnings as an insurance photographer, Chua is now a maverick in
the world of photography.

And now comes Victorino "Ino" Caluza, whose
love for jeans has fueled a fashion wildfire. This BS Math graduate from the
University of Santo Tomas started out in graphic design before building the
customized jeans brand, Viktor. Based on his myriad interests – painting,
architecture, graphic design, and travel – he chose to take control of his own
wardrobe and create jeans that fit him perfectly.

"I realized I've been
spending too much buying imported jeans," he narrates, recalling the major
turning point that gave us Viktor Jeans. "I was a collector of Diesel jeans
before, and I just decided that if I'm going to spend all my salary buying all
this, might as well make my own."

Trend of men wearing women's jeans

MAJOR jeans labels are reporting a spike in denim sales, as boys are buying female styles of tight-fitting, stove-pipe jeans.

"We're finding lots of blokes buying and wearing our skinny, stove-pipe style as they've found it hard to find jeans that tight and that comfy on the men's racks," says Sarah-Jane Clarke, of leading Australian denim label, sass & bide. "The blokes tend to be super skinny guys who like the comfort factor, probably because there is extra lycra used in female styles.

"Most of our male customers end up wearing our female size 14."

And Ms Clarke says their new higher-waisted style is being snapped up by blokes, too.

"They're buying them oversized and wearing them quite low," she adds.

His Super Ex-Girlfriend And Other Deal-Breakers

I’m pretty sure I’d go with someone I knew, and not just some random couple from a nightclub. So, after double-checking with my GF’s that my attire (Banana Rep top, Diesel jeans, andflat Guess shoes) could in no way be blamed for triggering that sort of proposal, all I could think was, "Only in LA!"

We did stick around for a bit to properly celebrate Dana’s amazing marathon last week, but it was definitely not my night. Chop it up to lack of sleep, PMS, no sex…whatever. By midnight, I just wanted to get the hell out of Dodge. So much for number-closing on some sharp-looking industry-execs, but there’ll be other opportunities. I promise.

Jeans top women's treat list

ONE in 10 women have spent at least £2,000 on a single item of clothing or an accessory, according to a new survey.

The average monthly spend on clothes and accessories was £170, though one in six confessed to splashing out £350 a month.

A pair of jeans was the top item women felt they could not live without. Favourite brands were Levis and Diesel.

Women said shopping trips left them feeling elated, although nearly a third felt guilty for overspending.

A fifth of those questioned admitted owning 70 pairs of shoes, while five per cent said they owned more than 100. Stilettos were the most popular style.

One in six women said they had at least 50 handbags and a Mulberry handbag topped the list of items women would save if there was a fire, followed by Jimmy Choo shoes.
